SuperTurbo Technologies Announces Collaboration with Achates Power

February 7, 2020

SuperTurbo Technologies Inc. has announced a collaboration with Achates Power to evaluate the SuperTurbo on the Achates Power 10.6L Heavy-Duty Opposed-Piston demonstration engine. The aim of the collaboration is to show improvements in efficiency and emissions, while reducing mechanical complexity. The SuperTurbo™ is a fully mechanical driven turbocharger that provides the benefits of supercharging, turbocharging and turbo-compounding in one device.

In addition to the Opposed Piston engine unique capabilities to manage exhaust energy and emissions, the SuperTurbo will include a programmable turbine bypass which allows for even more rapid heating of the aftertreatment system for reduced NOx production during cold start. Also, by eliminating the need for both a supercharger and a turbocharger the SuperTurbo will simplify the air system.

The SuperTurbo™ includes a high-speed traction drive that transfers bi-directional torque between the turbine shaft and a continuously variable transmission which then allows for overall ratio control between the turbo and the crankshaft. Since the turbine shaft speed is controlled, concerns with overspeed or lag are eliminated allowing for heavier higher efficient turbine designs. Driven turbochargers provide the ability to precisely control and balance boost pressure and air fuel ratio. The controls can be used to optimize fuel efficiency and emissions per the OEM’s objectives at different operating points.

The Achates Power 10.6L Opposed-Piston Engine is a diesel prototype engine for class 8 trucks, developed with grants from the California Air Resources Board, South Coast Air Quality Management District, and the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District. The OP Engine architecture is an enabling technology that achieves superior fuel efficiency by virtue of its lower heat losses, improved combustion and reduced pumping losses. The Heavy-Duty OP Engine program will deliver ultra-low NOx (0.02 g/bhp/hr), combined with low CO2, by managing exhaust gas temperatures to ensure rapid catalyst light off and by maintaining aftertreatment temperatures at optimum operating conditions in all driving conditions.
